With the increasing amount of available data and data transformations, typically specified by queries over the data, the need to understand them also increases.
"Why are these medicine books in my sales report?'' or "Why are there not any database books?'' To answer such Why and Why-Not questions that typically arise both in the scientific and commercial world, data provenance plays a crucial role. While Why questions have been widely addressed in classical databases, this is surprisingly not the case for Why-Not questions that only recently attracted the interest of the research community. In this talk, I will present an overview of the existing proposals on the field of Why-Not questions. Then, I will focus on the relational database domain and I will discuss our contribution of Why-Not polynomials, which we leverage to efficiently and effectively debug and fix queries in the case of missing results. Finally, I will refer to the perspectives of applying or adapting the proposed solutions, and provenance in general, in modern problem settings involving Big Data and the Web.
