Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the fourth cause of cancer death worldwide (around 470K new cases in 2015). Its survival rate depends on the stage it is detected on, hence the necessity of an early colon screening using modalities such as colonoscopy. Colonoscopy, although is still nowadays the gold standard, still presents some drawbacks being the most relevant the lesion (polyp) miss-rate - reported to be as high as 22% -.
During the last years, most of the developments in endoscopy have been focused on image quality improvement to provide clinicians with a clearer and more complete view of the scene. This advances include the development of high definition (HD) endoscopes or enhanced visualization modes such as Narrow Band Imaging (NBI). This improvement of device technology along with recent advances in the field of endoscopic image processing has generated a new field of research, intelligent systems for colonoscopy, which couples efforts from clinicians and computer scientists to develop computational methods aiming to aid clinicians both during intervention and in post-intervention time.
During this talk we will introduce which are the main applications that we envision these intelligent systems and we will present our work in this domain of research, which is focused on polyp detection and segmentation. As during the development of our work we have assessed the importance of image quality for improving methods’ performance, our presentation will also covers topics such as image enhancement and preprocessing methods and we will also introduce guidelines agreed upon clinicians to obtain the best possible image quality to help computer vision methods.
