We study the collective dynamics of balanced inhibitory networks with instantaneous synapses. Coherent oscillations, triggered by endogenous noise, emerge for sufficiently connected networks. The same mechanism induces in balanced excitatory-inhibitory networks quasiperiodic collective oscillations.

In real data it is found that gamma oscillations in the hippocampus of behaving rodents are segregated in two distinct frequency bands: slow and fast. These two gamma rhythms correspond to dfferent states of the network, but their origin has been not yet clarified. Here, we show theoretically and numerically that distinct fast and slow rhythms can coexist in one single population of spiking neurons.
